In January 2021, I started as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Connecticut, working on a NASA-funded project with Mark Urban and Thane Papke. The project focuses on the potential benefits of horizontal gene transfer during colonization of novel environments.
In December 2020, I defended my dissertation on the 'Environmental drivers and evolutionary consequences of horizontal gene transfer in soil bacteria'.

In early October, I headed to the beautiful Asilomar Conference grounds for the LTER All-Scientists Meeting. It was a great opportunity to learn about exciting research across LTER sites! I presented a poster on bacterial evolution in soil, and I also presented at the Science Idea Cafe about the need to measure extracellular DNA in the environment.
